Medical Administrative Specialist

Locklin Technical Center Medical Administrative Specialist Program will prepare students for employment as medical front desk specialists, medical office technologists, medical insurance assistants, medical records assistants or will provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these occupations.
The program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills expanding the traditional role of the Medical Secretary. The content includes the use of technology to develop communications skills, higher level thinking skills, and decision making skills; medical terminology; the performance of office procedures specific to the medical environment; transcription of medical documents from medical records dictation knowledge and practice of diagnostic and procedural coding; medical insurance billing; the production of quality work in an efficient manner using advanced features of business software applications; research of job opportunities; and the production of high quality employment documents and job-seeking documents.
The program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the medical secretarial industry: planning; management; finance; technical and production skills; underlying principles of technology; labor issues; confidentiality law; community issues; and health, safety, and environmental issues.
Minimum basic skills are a requirement before entry into this program where students receive instruction in medical office procedures, terminology and transcription, health insurance billing and coding. Students will gain proficiency in software applications such as Windows XP, Microsoft Office XP and Medical Manager. Also included in this program of study is a medical office internship.
